Family Portrait Sample ~At the Family Beach~

This family of seven was painted in oils on the beach in front of their summer home. The large grouping and size of the painting (3x4 ft)led me to create an intimate composition, that was "them" according to the Mom. The day was bright and clear, and the reflections added a great deal to the composition.

Two young children play by the bird bath in their back-yard. This is a great example of a personal setting and daily activity being transformed into a backdrop for a timeless image.

This is a classic example of a family portrait that connects to a particular place and time. The children are just at the age of still playing together as children before the girls grow up to be young women, and that time is captured here.

The setting, Edgartown harbor on Martha's Vineyard, is the perfect location for such a piece, with the beautiful water and beach, sailboat and lighthouse.
